How many of you have listened to politicians rail against their opponents, spouting exaggerations, trashing anyone who disagrees with them, and braying that if the public doesn’t vote the right way, democracy is out, and the country is headed toward collapse? I think all of us have, and we usually take it with a grain of salt. The most damaging part of these diatribes, however, is that they don’t inspire trust in American voters. We become cynical because instead of touting their accomplishments and rolling out plans for policies that improve American lives, they ignore the positive and focus on the negative. Two recent presidential candidates come to mind.

We, the American people can voice our displeasure at this nonsense, and in doing so, make a difference.

Email and call your U.S. and State elected officials regularly!

It’s easy to do, and if they receive enough feedback from their constituents on any issue, they will act on it. They will take it seriously, because, again, it can affect their reelection.

Members of the US Congress — this link features ways to contact your elected officials.

  1. You can write to them using the interactive form on the website, and you will receive a complete list of federal, state, and local elected officials.
  2. Move down the page, and tap the links “U.S. Senators,” and “U.S. Representatives.” You will answer a couple of questions about where you live to determine who your senators and representatives are.
  3. As you acquaint yourself with this website, you’ll see committees on which your representatives serve.
  4. The site also provides phone numbers and email addresses of each elected official; and if they’re not available when you call, you can leave a voice message or leave one with an aide.
  5. If you wish to contact your representatives about Congressional bills that are important to you, tap Track Congressional Bills. This site enables you to follow impending legislation that is meaningful to you. Among other things, it shows who’s co-sponsoring the bills.

Exercise your constitutional rights to fair representation by contacting your elected representatives, often. It will make a difference.
